Basketball Volunteers needed!

 The Calverton Rec Council needs a Basketball Commissioner for the upcoming 2010-2011 season.  Registration is scheduled for late October and early November, so there is still time for pre-season planning and filling other volunteer positions within the basketball program.  But time is becoming a factor.

 
Permits for gymnasiums have been requested by the outgoing commissioner, Scott Grady, who will also be available to answer questions and provide assistance during the transition to a new commissioner.

Coaches should download and bring a completed practice time preference form [link] to the December 3 Coaches’ meeting.  Over the last several years, most coaches got their first choice or second choice.

Games:  January 9, 16, 23, 30; February 6, 13, 20, 27 (Grade 7/8 games in late January (exact date TBD) will be on Sunday in Auxiliary Gym.  Check back later.)
 

Basketball News

***    Gymnasiums – Our youngest teams will be back in Galway this season after two years of renovations at the school.  Practices will be at Galway, Page and Fairland.

***    The CRC basketball games this year will be held at:
            K, 1st grade, 2nd grade   Galway Elementary School
            3rd Grade                        Fairland Elementary School
            4th Grade                        Beltsville Community Center
            5th Grade, 6th Grade       Martin Luther King Middle School
            7th/8th Grade                   High Point High School
           
***    As always, players may “play up” if they so choose, e.g. a 4th grade player may play in the 5th grade league.  What we do not want are older players with a competitive advantage over younger ones.  8th grade players who should be in 9th grade or higher age-wise should look for other programs in which to participate.

***    We still need a few Division Coordinators and a Referee Coordinator.  Neither of these is an overwhelming job and the Deputy Commissioners and I will provide schedules for all of the divisions.  We are also asking all coaches, parents and friends to help us bring in more referees.  We welcome basketball knowledgeable adults and students 14 and older.  If we do not get enough refs, we will have coaches/parents call their own games or play without referees.

We also need help taking registrations, and distributing uniforms or trophies to coaches.  A couple hours of your time over the course of the season goes a long way toward keeping this program in operation.  Please help us continue to provide a safe, healthy environment for our kids to learn the game, develop their skills, become good sportsmen and sportswomen and, above all, have fun.  This is a great opportunity to show your kids that they matter enough for you do devote a little of your time for their well-being.
